WHAT IS BOTOX® (BOTULINUM TOXIN)?

Botox® is an injectable treatment derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Botox® is a safe and effective treatment for those pesky wrinkles that sneak up on us over time. It's been approved by Health Canada and FDA for over 20 years to be safely injected into specific muscles in your face. Botox® helps relax the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles, giving your skin a smoother and refreshed look. It's also a versatile treatment approved for various medical conditions in clinics in Vancouver and across Canada, including chronic migraines, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), certain eye disorders, and even temporomandibular joint pain (TMJ). Whether it's relaxing a wrinkle or helping alleviate jaw pain, Botox® has become a powerful tool in the aesthetic and medical field.

IS BOTOX® SAFE?

Neuromodulators like Botox® are safe since they use highly purified proteins in extremely small, controlled doses to relax the muscles that cause wrinkles temporarily. When administered by a trained professional, these injections only affect the targeted muscles, leaving surrounding muscles unaffected. This precise application ensures the protein doesn't spread throughout your body. Botox®  has been extensively studied and has been used for cosmetic and medical treatments for several decades, dating back to 40 years. In our clinic in Vancouver, our expert doctors perform Botox® injections with best-practice techniques to ensure procedural safety and natural results.

HOW DOES BOTOX® WORK?

As we get older, we become more exaggerated versions of ourselves with facial wrinkles etched into our skin, generating frown lines and crow’s feet as well as other expression lines. When we make facial expressions, our brain sends a message to our muscles to move. Botox® is a purified protein that temporarily disrupts these nerve impulses to specific muscles, leading to a degree of muscle weakening and the subsequent relaxation and softening of wrinkles. These minimally invasive injections are directly applied to the targeted treatment area, with the face being the most popular choice for addressing deep wrinkles, improving lines, and promoting anti-aging effects. You might experience a momentary pinch or tingle during the injection process.

WILL BOTOX® INJECTIONS MAKE ME LOOK FROZEN?

Contrary to misconceptions, Botox® treatments do not lead to a "frozen face." By selecting a prescribing, medically qualified practitioner with extensive experience, you can greatly reduce the likelihood of experiencing a frozen appearance after Botox®. Our clinic in Vancouver is home to skilled doctors who have perfected the technique of achieving natural-looking results with Botox® treatments. Rest assured, you will appear refreshed and rejuvenated following such expert care.

BEST BOTOX CLINIC VANCOUVER: WHAT TO EXPECT?

Botox®  treatments allow you to maintain the ability to make all facial expressions. The entire appointment typically lasts about 15 minutes, and you can promptly resume most regular activities. Your injector may recommend waiting 4 hours before engaging in activities such as working out and other strenuous activities after the treatment.

ARE BOTOX® INJECTIONS PAINFUL?

Our needles are tiny, so it feels more like a quick pinch or a bug bite. Some areas of the face, like near the eyes, can be more sensitive than others. But the procedure is relatively fast, often taking less than 15 minutes, so any discomfort is over quickly. Before the injection, we will numb the area using ice or a topical numbing cream if required. Everyone's pain tolerance is different, but most patients find Botox® injections to be manageable and tolerable.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTOX® AND FILLERS?

Botox® and dermal fillers are both popular injectable treatments at our clinic in Vancouver to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. They work in different ways and addresses different signs of aging in our face. Botox® is a neuromodulator that relaxes the muscles under your skin and helps primarily with facial expression lines that convey emotion, such as frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet wrinkles around your eyes.

The relaxation of these muscles helps the skin look smoother and softens dynamic wrinkles, giving you a relaxed and more youthful appearance. Other popular treatment areas for Botox® include masseters, nose wrinkles, gummy smile correction, downward smile, chin dimpling, perioral lines, and vertical neck bands. Dermal fillers, another sought-after treatment in our clinic, work by strategically lifting saggy skin, replenishing lost facial volume, and plumping up areas like the lips. The most popular type of filler at our clinic is hyaluronic acid filler, which is the best for its safety profile and versatility for facial rejuvenation.

It is commonly done for lifting your cheeks, enhancing your jawline, projecting your chin and profile, smoothing out your nose, and correcting areas like the temporal hollows, marionette lines, and nasolabial folds.

For our patients, our doctors generally come up with a comprehensive treatment plan that includes both Botox® and dermal filler treatments to deliver the most natural results. During your visit to our clinic, our team can discuss the best treatment plan customized to your aesthetic and anti-aging wishes.

HOW MANY UNITS OF BOTOX® DO I NEED?

The number of Botox® units you need depends on several things, like the area you want to be treated, how strong your muscles are in that area, and the result you're looking for. Generally, men will require more Botox® units to relax the face as they tend to have stronger facial muscles. We encourage you to come in and talk to our team in Vancouver for a full assessment of your face and give you a more accurate estimate based on your individual needs. We believe that it's always better to start with a conservative dose and add more if needed rather than a high dose at the first visit.

BEST BOTOX CLINIC VANCOUVER: HOW LONG WILL RESULTS LAST?

These results generally last for about 3 to 6 months. After that time, the muscles gradually return to their normal function, and the wrinkles may reappear but are generally softer than before. With regular maintenance treatments done by our doctors with appropriate dosing, our patients look both youthful and natural. Most of our patients in our clinic in Vancouver return for their Botox® appointment every 3 to 4 months for the best cosmetic results.

the longevity of results will improve with regular botox maintenance treatments

The duration of Botox® treatment results varies depending on individual factors like muscle strength, metabolic rate, and the severity of wrinkles. You will see that the longevity of results will improve with regular maintenance treatments. If you are getting Botox® treatment for the first time, your muscles will 'learn' to relax. Our patients who receive Botox® treatments consistently over time may find that their results start to last a little longer as the muscles being treated learn to stay relaxed for extended periods.

WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON AGE FOR STARTING BOTOX®?

The most common age for starting Botox® treatments is typically in the early to mid-30s in our clinic in Vancouver. However, it can vary based on individual needs and goals. Some people might start in their mid-20s, especially if strong lines or wrinkles start to appear. This is often called "preventative botox" because the idea is to prevent deeper lines and wrinkles from forming. If you are unsure, we encourage you to come in for a consultation, as it really depends on your personal concerns and aesthetic goals.

WHEN SHOULD I EXPECT TO SEE THE RESULTS FROM BOTOX®?

Depending on the injection site, you can typically see results within 2 to 3 days. For some of our patients, the full effect may take up to 10 to 14 days to be visible.

At our clinic in Vancouver, our doctors may offer a touch-up appointment after 14 days for the best result.

There is no preparation needed for neuromodulator injections; however, we recommend you schedule a complimentary consultation from our Medical Doctors. This is to evaluate if neuromodulators or another treatment is the best option to achieve your desired goals.

All treatments begin with a consultation where our medical doctors who specialize in medical aesthetics will address your concerns. During this consult, a customized treatment plan will be tailored to your needs. This process involves taking your medical history, including understanding any past aesthetics procedures you may have had, along with your satisfaction with these past treatments. Next, your concerns are explored, and any solutions provided by neuromodulators are outlined in detail.

Our injectors will carefully inject neuromodulators at specific anatomical points in your face with a tiny needle during the treatment itself. Most people feel at most a quick pinch from the injection. If requested, the doctor can apply a local anesthetic to minimize any discomfort. When this option is used, the pinch is nearly indistinguishable from the gentle pressure of a light touch. In most cases, cosmetic neuromodulator treatments can easily be completed in under thirty minutes.

Neuromodulators have very minimal to no downtime. At most, one can expect some localized swelling and/or redness for a few hours following. Otherwise, this procedure requires no recovery time.

Immediately following a neuromodulator treatment, you may return to nearly all normal activities with no issues. You may have some slight redness or swelling at the injection site, but this usually resolves spontaneously within a few hours.

You will begin to see results from Botox® within a few days (3-5 on average), with most of the results appearing within a week. It is important to note that the results are a very natural-looking expression rather than the common misunderstanding of a “frozen” face. You will notice a change. Most people describe this charge as appearing well-rested, refreshed, or softened.

Botox® and other neuromodulators like Xeomin®, Dysport® or Nuceiva® are all injectable neuromodulators approved for minimizing fine lines and wrinkles. Probably the biggest myth around this topic is that the other brands are simply a cheap and generic version of Botox™.

All Health Canada-approved neuromodulators are effective in eliminating lines and wrinkles that occur due to repetitious muscle contractions involved in everyday facial movements. They work by the same mechanism of relaxing facial muscles. They differ by the formulation of the active ingredient. For example, Xeomin® contains only a single active protein ingredient, whereas the formulation of Botox® includes various protective proteins clustered around this same active molecule.

Though similar, different neuromodulators will have different personalities when it comes to results after injection. Our expert injectors will analyze your current facial anatomy, medical history, and desired results to determine the best course of treatment given your concerns. We will choose the right treatment options with you based on your experience and patient journey.

The cost of a neuromodulator treatment varies with each person based on the area treated, their current anatomy, and their desired results. These factors determine how many injections and what doses of neuromodulator are necessary or whether other treatments or procedures should be performed as part of the overall treatment plan. During your consultation, the cost, as well as payment options, are thoroughly reviewed. We accept cash, credit cards and debt payments.

This is variable and completely up to the patient. In our experience, the age that one should start using Botox® depends more on your anatomy, genetics, and environmental exposure than it is about age. In the era after the discovery of Botox®, age is truly just a number. Some clients start in their early 20’s and they already have wrinkles and lines whereas some start in their 40’s and don’t have as many lines.

Botox® can be used preventatively to prevent wrinkles from forming in the first place or to soften lines and wrinkles once they develop. It has been well studied and proven to be safe long-term for over twenty years. So the ideal age to start Botox® is truly a very personal decision.

Everyone is different, so the answer varies from patient to patient. In general, the results can be seen within three to seven days, and they last for three to six months with no downtime and minimal discomfort. Most of our patients enjoy results from maintenance treatments every three months, whereas some will wait a little longer between treatments.

Yes and no. A cosmetically elegant result will leave you looking refreshed, more cheerful and perhaps younger. We are careful to preserve natural movements so that patients continue to look themselves and completely natural.

Often there are signs that someone recently had wrinkle relaxing treatments, such as a smooth and glowing forehead or reduced crow’s feet. These effects can be tailored depending on your personal preference. It is also important to keep in mind that as long as you are happy with the results, it shouldn’t matter if your friends, family, or strangers can tell the difference. As we say to our family and friends at Sparrow MD, share the love!

Absolutely. Botox® and other neuromodulators, like Xeomin®, Dysport® or Nuceiva®, are highly purified proteins that work to reduce muscle contractions that cause frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet.

Without the injection, these same muscles contract hundreds of times a day and eventually etch deeper lines and wrinkles in the skin. When Botox® is injected, it relaxes the muscles underneath the skin, slows down the excess facial expression, allowing the lines and wrinkles to diminish over time. It can prevent the frown lines from forming between the eyebrows, lift corners of the mouth which often go downwards with age, smooth out the “pincushion” appearance in the chin, soften barcode lines around the lips, and soften vertical neck bands.

Optimized neuromodulator treatments should keep you looking refreshed and natural. Our treatment plan is designed to soften lines from excessive facial expressions such as frowning, squinting and raising eyebrows. It does not affect the nerves of sensation or make you feel or look "frozen."

Treatments at Sparrow MD are performed by experienced medical professionals that understand anatomy and can assess the strength of your muscles to decide how much Botox™ or neuromodulator treatment you actually need. Please book a consultation today with one of our medical doctors to further discuss your questions and needs.
